Alexander Scheirle, Festival Director

Festival Director since 2004, Alexander Scheirle also enjoys an international career as a cellist, performing concertos, chamber repertoire and orchestral music. He is principal cellist in the Crested Butte Festival Symphony Orchestra. Resident in the USA since 2007, he was born in Germany and trained at the Conservatories in Cologne, Aachen and Saarbruecken and at the Guildhall School in London, and has performed and recorded around the world with composers, soloists and conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Mstislav Rostropovich, Christopher Hogwood and Trevor Pinnock. From 1991 until 2007 he was principal cellist of the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, based in the city of Augsburg, and became its Artistic Director in 2000, remaining in the post for seven years.




David Stern, Music Director-Opera

Whether conducting a major symphony orchestra, a Baroque opera, teaching vocal master classes, or defending cultural activities, David Stern is a born communicator who rivets musicians, students and audiences alike by sharing his strong musical convictions, his flexibility of approach and his belief that music is of essence and relevance in today’s world. He is currently music director of the Israeli Opera and founder/director of the Paris-based opera studio and period-instrument ensemble, Opera Fuoco, in addition to being a frequent guest conductor with orchestras around the globe. This year’s engagements include those with the Vienna Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Haydn Di Bolzano e Trento Orchestra. He is a regular guest with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and with the Bayerische Kammmerphilharmonie, the Ulster Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony and Guangzhou Philharmonic Orchestras, among others. With Opera Fuoco, Stern recently recorded and toured a fully-staged production of Johann Christian Bach’s opera, “Zanaida,” which he premiered at the 2011 Bachfest in Leipzig. His recording of this work on ZigZag/Outhere Label received a ‘CHOC’ award from the French magazine Classica.

Lynn Baker, Artistic Director, Opera Studio and Master Vocal Coach
Lynn Baker, Artistic Director of the Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program, is a vocal coach and collaborative pianist in New York City. She was an Assistant Conductor and English Diction Coach at New York City Opera until its closing in 2013, and serves as Vocal Consultant for New York City Ballet. She has also coached vocal works in English for Seattle Opera, College-Conservatory of Music at University of Cincinnati, Bard Summerscapes Festival, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (Bernstein’s Mass, recorded for Naxos American), and Opera New Jersey. She has been a faculty member for young artist programs, including Juilliard Opera Center, Renata Scotto Opera Academy, Seattle Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera and Opera New Jersey. She has coached and performed with opera companies and festivals such as Spoleto Festival Charleston, Washington Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Gotham Chamber Opera. Baker is a frequent collaborative recitalist; notable venues include the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum, Alice Tully Hall, and the East Room of the White House. She is an avid performer of new and contemporary opera and art song, and was a participant in New York City Opera’s VOX program for new American operatic works.
